A Canyon in Hawaii

Three nights on Kauai, on a flight left over from Paris, with shave ice, waterfalls, a canyon and a monk seal.

This trip began as a leftover. Our tickets home from Paris came with one more flight within North America, and we were not about to lose it: Los Angeles to Kauai on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. With six of us, we booked two rooms at the Courtyard rather than crowd into one, and the plan was to fly home to San Jose. Then, one morning in June, seats opened up on the Wednesday flight back to Los Angeles, and all six of us moved onto it.

So it was a short one: a drive to Los Angeles, three nights on the island with a rented minivan, and a drive home. In between we reached most corners of the island a road can reach: shave ice, roosters and a waterfall the afternoon we landed, the canyon and the south shore on Labor Day, the end of the road on the north shore the day after, and a sleeping monk seal on the morning we left.

Day 1

South for the weekend

Saturday of Labor Day weekend meant the long drive down to Los Angeles, so that we could be at the airport first thing the next morning.

Day 2

Shave ice and roosters

1Kapaa

The Hee Fat General Store, a shop on the east side with a gift corner and a shave-ice counter, was our first stop on Kauai: the shelves full of carved wood, aloha shirts and a map of the islands.

A big yellow-and-white shave ice got eaten on the porch, slowly, before it could melt.

Roosters were already strolling across the road. Farther on, the twin falls of Opaekaa Falls poured down a green gorge behind a hedge of bougainvillea, and we all lined up at the green railing with the falls at our backs.

Between the falls and the beach, the white minivan sat on a patch of red dirt with more chickens pecking around it, and the Wailua River wound down its valley to the sea.

At Lydgate Beach Park in Wailua we took turns posing at the painted rock, and after that came a good long while of digging in the pale sand under the ironwood trees.

Day 3

Clouds on the ridges

2Waimea Canyon3Spouting Horn1Kapaa

Labor Day began before sunrise, with a pool glowing blue under the palms, a hotel with its windows still lit, and a thin gold line under a stormy sky over the sea.

By mid-morning we were on the red dirt above Waimea Canyon, the whole width of the island from Coconut Beach. Cloud lay along the far rim, and mist filled the canyon below the edge.

At the lookout, clouds sat on the ridges, the red walls dropped away below, and a wooden sign gave the elevation as 3,400 feet. We lined up at the wire railing, and again at the sign.

Then down to the south shore, where the blowhole at Spouting Horn near Poipu sent spray high over black lava, with red hibiscus along the path.

Lunch was at picnic tables in the shade nearby, with the island's chickens walking about underfoot, and then came one more photo at a railing above the sea. The last photograph of the day is a rocky shoreline under big clouds.

Day 4

The end of the road

1Kapaa4Ke'e Beach

Our last full day on Kauai began with the sky over the sea turning purple and then orange, while two of us stood on the lawn by the water watching the sun break through the clouds.

By late morning we were at the far end of the road on the north shore. On the first rocky stretch of the Kalalau Trail, the palms opened onto a white beach and its reef: Ke'e Beach, with a few people on the sand and surf lines breaking on the reef far out.

Day 5

The seal on the beach

1Kapaa

Our last morning on Kauai belonged to a Hawaiian monk seal, asleep at the waterline on the beach at Kapaa. It lay on the golden sand at the edge of the choppy surf, with green mountains along the coast behind it, and it was still there at noon, in the last photograph anyone took on the island.

The flight home was the one that had miraculously opened up in June, in place of the San Jose flight we had first planned.

The practical bits American Airlines from Lihue to Los Angeles in the early afternoon, due in that evening. The Hertz minivan was due back at the Lihue airport at noon.

Day 6

Home by nightfall

Thursday was the drive home from Los Angeles, and we were back by nightfall.
